I think about to buy a ss4200 and use it with Debian or Ubuntu as OS to run more services then simple NAS (PXE Server ...)
I read about hardware issues with Ubuntu 8.10 and the IDE controller. Can you please post a lscpi -n to get a overview on http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/
The Linux section on this pbworks site is not very informative - we should change this ;)

Hi

I also tried to run debian on the ss4200.
But at the moment, i cannot connect to the nas after booting. The next days, i will get a graphic card, then i will be able to install debian properly.

I'm running Debian (Sid) on a 'converted' (removed all traces of Windows and actually will get/got some money back from Fujitsu, see 'Windows refund on Scaleo 2200 (SS4200-E)') Scaleo 2205 without any problems. I currently use the stock kernel and it just works. As far as I can see there are no hardware issues worth mentioning... I can boot from both the DOM as well as the SATA drives. I have not tried eSATA for lack of such a beast. Booting Debian (or grml which is derived from Debian) from USB sticks is also possible and works without failure. I used a serial console to change the boot order to get the USB stick to boot. What sort of problems are you (afraid of) running into?

Ah I don't have "angst" I just wannt to make sure to be prepared before I start the project ;-)
And this is the first site where I found something about the SS4200 and Linux - all other sites speak about FreeNas or OpenNAS. But these OS are very limited to add more services like mmmh PXE-Server etc...

BTW, I just entered the SS4200 on http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/

The results were 'all OK' but I do not see the machine in the list yet. If you want to try for yourself you'll find the output for 'sudo lspci -n' in the article these comments are attached to.

I got Ubuntu running on mine with a serial console. Works great. I actually did the install under qemu/kvm first, though to sort out the bugs, then stuck it on an IDE drive and replaced the DOM.

I Tried it quite simular, but i used Virtualbox to install Debian Lenny on my 4GB CF card. But after inserting and booting it, i cannot connect to my ss4200.

Does the network come up? It sounds to me like it doesn't. Can you ping it? Do you have a router to supply it with an IP address, or did you configure it for a static IP? What is in your /etc/network/interfaces file?

The ethernet controller in this thing is nothing special: an Intel 82573V which should work with just about any 2.6.x kernel using the e1000e driver (but see http://lwn.net/Articles/278016/ for some potential pitfalls).

I configured the network as a dhcp client, but it does not get a IP address.
At my second try, i configured a static IP, but with the same results.

Wow! Thanks for the great replies!
I think I start at first only with 2 1TB HDDs and Raid1 and I may add a few months later 2 1TB HDDS and start a Raid5
Next question:
- how do you control the Raid on the SS4200? Is it controlled via BIOS or via the OS? I never did this before ;)

Cheers,
David

The Raid is a software raid

romses: what is in your /etc/network/interfaces file? Mine is imple:

#/etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Exact the same thing as in my /etc/network/interfaces
I think, the correct nic driver could not be loaded, or the boot process is interrupted before initializing the network

Here is my way how I installed Debian 5 on SS4200-E. Maybe it's for one of you helpfull.
I prepaired a PATA disc (2.5“) which allready had Grub installed (old notebook disc) and copied 'netboot debian installer' files (initrd.gz, linux) in a subfolder of boot. (/boot/newinstall)
Now I modified the menu.lst and added the console options for serial and created a new first boot entry.
.....
serial --unit=0 --speed=38400 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1
terminal --timeout=10 serial console
.....
title Debian Installer
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/newinstall/linux console=tty0 console=ttyS0,38400n8
initrd /boot/newinstall/initrd.gz
Now I replaced the DOM by the prepaired PATA disc. When you boot up and you are connected via serial link and your terminal emulator uses the right settings (38400,8,n,1) you can do a Debian network installation (Internet access needed). During the installation process you can also repartitioning/format your OS disc – no problem the installer is running in a ramdisc.

Ok, I solved my Problems!
Debian is running.

I Used a Cardreader to take a look on my CF Card.
There I edit my /boot/grub/menu.lst and added "console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8 " to my kernel line
I also added

serial --unit=0 --speed=115200 --word=8 --parity=no --stop=1
terminal --timeout=10 serial console

to enable the serial concole in Grub.

After that, I was able to determin, what was goinh wrong:
The entry "auto eth0" was missing, so my nic was not started.
Aditionally, i had some hardware issues with my ethernet switch, which made the things more complicated (but this is another story)

At the moment, i am installing Samba, mt-daapd and Twonkymedia and my 6TB Raid5 is syncing (ZZZzzzZZZ...)

Is there ANYONE out there that is able to boot off the IDE port if the bios configured for "enhanced" mode rather than "compatible"?

I've tried just about every flavor of Ubuntu with the only storage device connected to it being 2.5" PATA drive, yet no version will see the IDE PATA drive.

If I change the bios mode from "enhanced" to "compatible" then even Jaunty will see the PATA drive, but then I'll have no AHCI for the eSata ports.

Any ideas would be appreciated...

I have a CF card (in a DI adapter) that boots fine with GRUB or FreeBSD's bootloader when the bios is set to enhanced mode.

Accessing the card once the kernel has loaded tends to be problematic, though; it's only detected using the generic IDE driver through the legacy ISA ports, and is, in my experience, quite slow.

I was hoping to be able to install Ubuntu to a Pata device CF or otherwise to be assessable via remote console and still have the bios set to enhanced mode. Maybe that's just more trouble than it's worth. I'll look into installing Ubuntu to a USB flash drive and see how that goes.
